John Stanley's Creature Features Movie Guide Strikes Again: An A to Z Encyclopedia to the Cinema of the Fantastic or Is There a Mad Doctor/Dentist I
Published in Paperback by Creatures at Large Pr (April, 1995)
Authors: John Stanley, Kenn David, and Kenn Davis
Average review score:

An excellent survey for avid movie-watchers
This science fiction, fantasy and horror movie guide provides an excellent survey of the genre to fans who are avid movie-watchers: chapters provide capsule reviews of thousands of films, provide a rating system and guide to obscure and rare as well as mainstream titles, and include distribution and mail order information. Outstanding.

A Must Have For All Horror Movie Fans
I own MANY film reference books, including many inclusive to horror and cult films. This is by far the best one I own. It gives extremely detailed entertaining descriptions of each of its ,many films. It has many hard to find titles. I was extremely impressed with this book and recommend it to everybody.

A Must-Have for all genre fans!
This book is a Genre fans dream! I happen to be one of those people who like Horror, Sci-fi, and Fantasy movies. I own several books on each subject. When I found this book in a used book store, I never imagined that I would find something that so perfectly matched my taste in movies. There are 5,614 reviews with intelligent descriptions behind each one. I take my copy to the video store with me! That way I know I'm not renting a total turkey. Some of the major pluses included in the book are: TV movie reviews, 1,709 cross references to secondary titles, direct-to-video reviews, and the fact that an estimated 30% of the titles listed in the book cannot be found in most major movie guides. The last fact is entirely true! I have also noticed that there are little if any errors in the reviews. Other books I have read , have many noticeable mistakes that tend to irk genre fans like myself. Try it out for yourself, this book has never done me wrong!

The Jolly Art of Junking: Finding Treasure in the Trash & Other Fun Places
Published in Paperback by Raincliffe Press (November, 1997)
Authors: Larry H. Almond, L. A. Davis-Almond, and Anthony Townsend
Average review score:

Suprisingly Readable... Fun, Too
Davis, in a stroke of genius, has written a book about, well, junk. We all have it, we are all loathe to part with it, we're forever buying more of it and no one ever seems to know what to do with it. Davis knows, though, and she graciously invites us into her home via Townsend's photographs to see exactly how lining our walls with junk can make our homes exquisite.

Davis has written a readable, highlightable little book in her unique and playful style and has consequently introduced us to the treasures that lie dusty in our own garages. Everyone who lives within 200 miles of a flea market must own this book!

Great fun! Really a neat little book with good ideas.
I really enjoyed reading the book. It is fun and has a lot of ideas for "junk" a holics.

Quite enjoyable! Lots of fun neat ideas.
The book was really a lot of fun! I enjoyed it.

Keeper of the Piece
Published in Paperback by Windstorm Creative (November, 2000)
Author: Lesley Davis
Average review score:

Hopefully not the last
This is a little novel that opens up a whole world. In the best tradition of Tolkein, Davis creates a world of her own where some people can understand plants, some can totally relate to the emotions of others and a very few are gifted with the ability to talk to animals. Davis introduces you to this world through the efforts of two Adepts. Lorrah is a doctor who can feel the potential for medical cures in plants. She is searching for a remarkable flower mentioned in a long forgotten journal that promises to cure many ailments. She needs the help of Tate, who closely guards the secret that she is an even rarer Adept who can talk to and command animals. The novel isn't very long, but contains a lot of adventure and romance. If you like fantasy and a quick read, you'll love this book. One can only hope that Davis will continue to tell more about this world in later books.

Charming and Exciting
I was thrilled with the storyline and excited to watch it unfold before my eyes. It was full of fun and surprises at every turn. You won't be able to put this book down and I can't wait until her pen touches paper to create her next thrilling novel!

Warm and Entertaining!
This is an excellent book, with a warm story full of humor and adventure! I look forward to anything else the author may write in the future. She is a good storyteller, with wonderful descriptions and prose. Great work on your first novel!!

The Life and Writings of Abraham Lincoln (Modern Library Paperback Classics)
Published in Paperback by Modern Library (10 October, 2000)
Authors: Abraham Lincoln, Philip Van Doren Stern, Allan Nevins, Philip Van Doren Stern, Jafferson Davis, and William J. Cooper
Average review score:

Nice compact edition
There are some who consider Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln the two greatest writers in American history- and not in that order. Others have compared Lincoln's eloquence to none other than Shakespeare. Both are wonderful compliments, and in my mind highly accurate. Abraham Lincoln was a master of the English language.

This is a nice single volume of Lincoln's best known writings. It has all the great speeches you have heard of (Gettysburg Address, etc.)plus many the non specialist might have missed. If you are a specialist, you probably already own Roy Basler's nine volume set of Lincoln's writings. If you do not, this fine volume will suit you nicely and help you to understand why Lincoln is the revered man that he is.

Honest Abe
This is a great book. I think the introduction is the best. It is interesting plus you really feel Lincoln was a man of the people. My favorite part was when Lincoln had one of his sons in a wagon. Lincoln was so much in his thoughts that the child fell out and was crying loudly and Lincoln kept walking dragging an empty wagon behind him.

A one-volume Lincoln library.
I have a large Civil War library, and if there was a fire, this is the one Lincoln book I would try to rescue. Despite being written almost 50 years ago, the book's strong point is not its selection of Lincoln's writings (although that is quite good), but its masterful biographical sketch of Lincoln by Stern. Almost seven score since Lincoln's death, there is still no other satisfying BRIEF biography. In about 200 pages, Stern has managed to capture, in skilfull prose, all the important facts while still having room for some less-wordy, interesting comments. Each important event is succinctly captured in a couple paragraphs. I like that Stern actually calls Lincoln "neurotic" in certain personal aspects. I also like his passages on Willie Lincoln's death, emancipation, and the war's closing. There's really not enough room for any heavy politically-influenced interpretations of issues like those in modern long biographies, and that's why Stern's sketch can't be considered outdated. Some people may not like the short description of Lincoln's assassination, and I thought Stern spent too much ink on Lincoln's final attempts to compensate the South. Since the book predates the most comprehensive, closely-inspected collection of Lincoln's letters, there may be some inaccuracies in the writings reproduced here. However, the selection is an excellent one, linked together well with intros by Stern. I can't imagine this was an easy job for Stern and I'm lost why it's been virtually ignored. But all in all, I can only repeat, if you want to know the most about Lincoln in the fewest words, and have your interest held throughout, just buy this book and you're set!

Life on a Mediaeval Barony: A Picture of a Typical Feudal Community in the Thirteenth Century

review
I want to leave positive feedback for Keith at chaplinkt, the seller for my book. He was friendly and courteous. The book is in great condition; and it is hardback, which I wasn't sure of when I ordered, and which I much prefer. thanks

Reader Friendly Research
This book is written in a conversational style and tells the story of a year in the life of a family in France. The information is detailed and written very clearly. The chronological ordering of the events makes it easy to select the information most applicable to your research. The book covers deaths, weddings, harvest, travelling to visit other nobles, Christmas and other holidays and daily life of all levels of society on the barony. I have done a lot of research in this area and this is my favourite resource and the one I keep rereading.

Excellent
That's definitely an excellent book about medieval life. If you like medieval history, buy it.

Life Surrendered in God: The Philosophy and Practices of Kriya Yoga
Published in Hardcover by Csa Pr (June, 1995)
Author: Roy Eugene Davis
Average review score:

Yoga theory, practice and commentary on the Sutras.
The author has done an amazing job of bringing Kriya Yoga out from under the veil of mystery, in a manner which is consistent with and can be easily understood by the modern western mind.

Investing your heart and mind in this book, the readers who use it as a guide to and a prelude for meditation will, with a little effort, understand beyond question not only what is meant by the title, "A Life Surrendered In God", but can experience the joy of that surrender for themselves.

An interesting book
The Author is a disciple of the great Kriya master, Paramahansa Yogananda, who was reponsible for bringing Kriya and Yoga medetation to the world beyond India in a lasting and widely effective way. For more data on Babaji and Kriya Yoga I recommend reading, "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramahansa Yogananda, from Self-Realization Publishers via Amazon.

An interesting voyage in the world of raja yoga
Written by a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, this book supplies with information about Patanjali's Yoga Sutras with commentary and explains routines for meditation practices. I would suggest this book to people really interested in spiritual advancement.

Lighten Up!
Published in Audio Cassette by Zondervan (01 February, 2000)
Author: Ken Davis
Average review score:

Ken does it again, great message
Ken does a great job of telling stories from his life and relating them to his topic in this cassette. He mixes very funny comedy into his serious topics very effectively. In this instance, Ken tells us to see the funny side of things once in a while in life and not always take things so serious because God gave us a sense of humor for a reason, he wants us to enjoy the live he has given us. Highly recommended!

For the whole family
Ken Davis' Lighten Up was great for the whole family, including parents and children aged 8 and 18. Very nice for long trips or for listening while working around the house.

Funny and Thought-provoking!
Ken Davis does a fantastic job of telling true stories which anyone can relate to. His overall messge is powerful and positive. He urges each of us to be true to ourselves, and to see the humor in life all around us. Davis has a strong personal faith in God, but he doesn't hit you over the head with his beliefs. My 8 & 10 year old children were laughing out loud and (I hope) absorbing the underlying message as well. He is terrific! I am eager for the next one!

Making Progress in Russian
Published in Audio Cassette by John Wiley & Sons (June, 1984)
Authors: Patricia Anne Davis and Donald V. Oprendek
Average review score:

A good workbook for review or maintaining proficiency.
We used this workbook as a supplement to the textbook for our second year Russian class, but for me this was a more enjoyable and useful! It's simply 16 chapters of sentences. On one side of the page in English, on the other side in Russian, so you can test yourself going either way and the sentences are short enough so that you're not overwhelmed. I used this for years as a way to review or get back into Russian, regain some fluency, etc. It may take 6 or 7 hours to go through the entire workbook, so you can do this easily an hour a day for a week and not get burned out. The sentences are interesting enough and not totally dry so that you are not bored to death as you work through the text. All in all a good book for those who already know some Russian, but want to practice coming up with sentence structures without having to invent their own sentences.

Simply the best Russian textbook available
Davis & Oprendek's _Making Progress in Russian_ is without a doubt the best second-year Russian textbook I have seen. The exercises are thorough and often demanding, but the explanations more than prepare you for the work. This is a dense, well-written grammar text that leaves you feeling rather competent as a reader/speaker/writer of Russian without talking down to you or giving you a false sense of your level of fluency.
